And how did that affect the rest of the world? Was it worth the 50+ thousand American lives. What exhaustion? It probably would have gone on for another 20 years.

How much different would the outcome have been if we withdrew 2 years earlier, or 3 or 4, or if we never got involved? If anything, we probably just delayed Viet Nam's experiment with communism. The point is that we were there to placate right wing gung-ho radicals. It's too bad that they get to conscript young men to do die in order to advance their agenda.
