A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a data transmission network which stores large amounts of data online, allowing a corporation to access and retrieve files through the internet.

A company like General Motors would have massive amounts of data that their employees would need access to, and the data needs to be stored in specially designed computers with redundant file serving in case of computer disk failure.

They have to be able to serve files quickly, and serve as many users as are requesting the files at the time, and cope with the computer failure.

All this usability takes special software and hardware, and it needs to be easy to use so that IT budgets aren't drained.
Netstor products address these issues, and this area is cited as a massive growth area in the next few years.

According to an article I read some IT professionals are dedicating 75% of their budget to Storage Area Network, because it is a necessity.

As a company puts all their data online, and it continues to grow everyday, the demand for storage grows, and having it acessible online is crucial to business today, hence the evolution of 'Storage Area Networks'.
