On the subject of CSCO and pro forma.

I thought I understood pro forma, having used the term for years. Thinking about the CSCO situation, I realized that I have no idea what governs pro forma. Reason being that more and more companies are reporting pro forma earnings when convenient, vs non-pro forma. As an example, CSCO reported pro-forma earnings of .16 vs non pro-forma earnings of .11. So which version did they report last qtr or last year? Which would they be reporting next year?

Are there GAAP or SEC rules as to how pro forma is specifically defined and what should be reported?
