This may not apply to your particular problem but it seems like there is a school of thought that many problems with 98 can be attributed to a new vxd file. You might want to check out this "fix" if problems continue. I was having problems with mouse freezes and lockups where ctrl-alt-dele wouldn't function and (knock on wood) have had smooth sailing since installing this file a few days ago.
