Re: IBM: We're within striking distance of their market cap. I say we'll overtake them by Halloween. ...
JC,
Come on, get real? This ain't gonna happen.
Where is the Ultra Sparc III? I find it funny you guys share the view that Sun doesn't need it because there is already so much demand for the current Sun servers. Boy, that makes a lot of sense, the S80 is outselling the E10000 at a ratio of 3 to 1, but we won't make a big upgrade, we'll let IBM keep outselling us? Yeah right!!! Keep in mind, the only good part of IBM's earnings were web server revenues. Also, keep in mind, that the S80 was the only server to have the new chips the **WHOLE** quarter, the rest came **mid-quarter**.
I also think it's messed up how you guys think they will be rolling out the low end first with the USIII. This doesn't make any sense at all to me. If you massively upgrade the low end, it will just cut into / eliminate the mid range. Look at what IBM did, top end down, with good success I might add. The only reason this strategy would make sense to me is if it was a last minute ditch effort. This is because the low end is single processor, so in other words, there is a problem with SMP boards, but you need to get new product out the door. I doubt this is the problem, in my opinion either the USIII is no where near ready for release, or Sun is being ***VERY*** dumb.
Earnings are fine for the next two quarters in my opinion, but something has to give on the USIII because the benchmarks better be good because this is what Sun's left with for a while.
