John,

I think Sony has the power to sell just about anything they want to. Clearly the latest Mavica will compete with their Cybershot brand using Memory Stick. Also, the new camera will be bulky and very expensive at $1200+. At that price it really competes with a digital camcorders, not digital cameras.

The CD-Mavica allows only one writing session, so each diskette will cost $4.00 per session. I like to archive my photos by event. I will create files based on themes such as vacations, birthday parties, weekend social events,... I would hate to be limited to leaving the CD in the device until such time I filled it up. Some weekends we may go with the kids to a lake and swim. It would be typical to shoot maybe 10-20 shots in a day. At the end of the day I typically pull out my CF card, show the kids the pictures via a slideshow function on Sierra Image Expert and copy those 20 shots to my PC with a title selected to jog my memory about the content. The same scenario for the CD-Mavica would require me to spend $4.00 for those shots and to create a dedicated CD. Otherwise I have to wait for the next photo opportunity and hope to fill the diskette at that setting.

Part of the fun of digital photography is immediacy.
Part of the economy of digital photography is eliminating recurring consumable costs like film.
I think the CD-Mavica fails on both counts.
