B: Lakeside Packers recalls hamburger after E.coli found in beef

CALGARY, Aug 09, 2000 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- Lakeside Packers has
recalled more than 65,000 kilograms of ground beef - enough to make more than a
half-million quarter-pound hamburgers - after a sample was found to contain a
deadly strain of E. coli bacteria.

The hamburger was produced July 19 at Lakeside plant in Brooks, Alta., the
company said in a release Wednesday. The bacteria was discovered after testing
by food inspectors in the United States. No illnesses have been associated with
the hamburger, the company said.

The recall involves beef packaged in 10-pound tubes. Wholesalers, retailers and
distributors in Canada and the United States have been contacted, although the
company says it is unlikely any of the meat remains on the market.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment.

The bacteria is E. coli 0157:H7, the strain blamed for deaths of six people in
Walkerton, Ont., earlier this summer.

In June, Lakeside Packers had to recall 77,000 kilograms of ground beef tainted
with the same strain of E. coli.

The bacteria can lead to kidney failure and death in children, senior citizens
or people with weak immune systems.

Thoroughly cooking the meat kills the bacteria.

The recall does not apply to prepackaged fresh or frozen beef patties or other
boxed beef items.
