<<The rumor is that they are developing the processes to make "thingamajigs" for communications equipment.>>

The rumor source I find is a Robertson Stephanson RDRT report in last week of July (in which they slightly revised their future loss estimates negatively and raised their estimate of the potential for future positive earnings surprises). When you have it both ways you can't be wrong :o)

As I understand it DWDM uses a single fiber to carry multiplexed signals differentiated by frequency. The key components are the optical filters which de-multiplex the light into discrete channels and converters which transform each into a digital electrical signal that a router can then deal with. These are made from silicon chips, like a MR head is, so I suppose that is the hook for RDRT. What particular technology associated with MR heads (if any) might be particularly helpful in making DWDM components is a mystery to me, but it is possible there is one and I just don't know enough about it.

The cynic in me thinks it more likely that the logic hangs on the VECO experience. They bought into the optical tool market and saw their stock go through the roof. Since DWDM stocks don't depend on earnings for valuation it is clearly the best business for RDRT to be in :o)

The more critical question I have is how well they are currently competing with TDK? These latest programs they seem to have picked up....is that because they were actually better or is that because the drivemakers are doing their bit to preserve diversity?

Best Regards......Tom
