I have seen Ritalin and other drugs fail every time in the case of my nephew who is diagnosed with ADHD. Apart from the fact that ADHD is over-diagnosed not everyone with a specific diagnosis responds to the same drug. I'm manic-depressive. Lithium, the standard treatment help but caused other problems. The anti-convulsants, the second line of treatment, all either stupified me or did nothing for me. I didn't get a really successful treatment until trying the anti-psychotics, which is currently pretty much the end of the road. It's also true that the early stages of manic-depression are misdiagnosed as ADHD. Ritalin, being a stimulant, is not something you want to give to a manic-depressive. And it's also true that currently, there are some people that do not respond to any known treatment. just because you have two data points; aberrant behavior and abnormal brain development or chemistry, does not mean that you have identified the causal relationship. When changing the chemistry changes the behavior in a significant number of people, you've got to begin thinking in terms of cause and effect.
