...privacy is not absolute ... rational expectations of privacy ...whether or not we have "lost" any freedoms.

On the surface, PJ, I'd have to agree. Delve a bit deeper into the issue, though, and we have to decide on what the "baseline" of privacy is. If you live in a tenement apartment with no curtains and no lock on your door, you may have a different expectation of privacy than I do, where my nearest neighbor is several miles away. I don't expect you to abide by my privacy standards, and I certainly don't expect to have to live by someone else's.

The same applies to my telephone, mailbox, and internet connections. Judging from some of the moronic stuff I've seen that passes for "written communication" via email, with the 50+ forwarded addresses 'in the clear,' I definately have a different standard for my email privacy than the person who forwarded the email -- and I never hesitate to let them know what my standards are.

When it comes to others knowing things about me, without my knowledge or consent, I firmly believe that the strictest standard should be the baseline, and any more liberal treatment should only be with my permission and knowledge.
