VIA is releasing 1.2GHz chip by the end of the year Via Tech to Debut High-Speed Processor This Year, CT Says 8/9/0 21:10 (New York) Taipei, Aug. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Via Technologies Inc., the world's No. 2 computer chipset designer, will introduce a new processor by year-end that runs at 1.2 gigahertz, challenging some of the latest offerings from rivals Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the Commercial Times reported, citing vice president for development Lin Tsu-mu. The new processor, codenamed ``Samuel 2'' will succeed the original ``Samuel'' Cyrix III processor now in commercial production at 60,000 to 70,000 units per month. Via will also introduce a new low-power processor next year designed for Internet appliances that could compete with chips from Transmeta Corp., the paper said. Via shares are up 48 percent so far this year compared with a 5 percent fall in the benchmark index.
