Chile is expected to ratify a mining treaty with neighboring
Argentina this week that many say could lure billions of dollars in
gold and copper projects along their mineral-rich border, reported
the Bloomberg news agency. The treaty would likely put an end to the
endless red tape and dual taxes that have long made cross-border
projects economically unfeasible. Congressional leaders say the
treaty, which Argentina ratified in March, will allow at least $6.0
billion in mining projects to go ahead. Two cross-border projects
that are already planned include Cambior's (CBJ:TSE,ME) El Pachon
copper mine and Barrick Gold's (ABX:TSE,ME,NYSE) Pascua Lama, which
will be the biggest silver mine in the world. (Aug 9/00)
