Moreover, the merger could accelerate the use of Internet protocol for all forms of communications, such as voice, e-mail and fax. This would in turn drive utilization of IP networks, such as IBasis (IBAS: news, msgs) or ITXC (ITXC: news, msgs), said Rick Juarez, another analyst at Robertson Stephens.
IBasis, which provides voice-over-IP service on a wholesale basis to carriers, uses Software.com's software for its unified messaging offerings and has a relationship with Cisco Systems. Shares of IBasis initially traded as high as 24 but ended the day modestly lower.
ITXC, which provides a wholesale Internet telephony network, saw shares jump 7 percent to 23 1/2. Tumbleweed Communications (TMWD: news, msgs), which provides security software for Internet communications, saw shares rise 1.3 percent to 56.
But a Software.com and Phone.com combination presents challenges for other unified messaging providers.
