<font color=red>Advanced Micro Details New 64-Bit Chip to Match Intel Itanium

Sunnyvale, California, Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.'s main rival in making computer microprocessors, released technical details of a new chip that could challenge Intel's upcoming Itanium product.

Advanced Micro's 64-bit chip, code-named ``Hammer,'' is scheduled for release at the end of next year. The manual will help software companies develop applications and operating systems using the new processor.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company gained sales as Intel failed to keep up with demand for personal-computer chips during the first half of the year. Advanced Micro also stepped up the technical competition, beating Intel earlier this year in introducing speedier chips.

The new device will help manage memory-hungry applications like databases and computer-assisted design, Advanced Micro said.

Intel's 64-bit Itanium chip is aimed at high-end machines such as workstations and server computers. The No. 1 chipmaker has said it will start getting revenue from the processor in the fourth quarter. Systems with the chip and added software from computer makers are expected in the first half of next year.

Advanced Micro shares fell 9/16 to 60 7/16 on the New York Stock Exchange yesterday. They have more than doubled this year. Santa Clara, California-based Intel rose 1 15/16 to 63 9/16.
