"a fight which has little more than a puncher's chance to satisfy a boxing purist"
franco, i have a question. have you seen any golota fights? did you see the two riddick bowe fights? the grant fight? in all three golota was demonstrating superb ring generalship. then, it was as if two frayed wires somewhere crossed and the whole thing short-circuited.
with bowe, there were the repeated low blows. but make no mistake, bowe was being thoroughly beaten, and he knew it, and he knew his best, hell, his only chance to get out of there alive was to roll around on the canvas holding his crotch and screaming for mercy from the referee. bowe was doing his own job of selling, as only a desperate man can do.
with michael grant, there was the apparent tank job, where some say golota quit. i say it was more along the lines of a misunderstanding. whatever the ref asked golota in that fight confused him. like it wasn't a standard, "are you alright?". these guys can't be taking quizzes in there, particularly when they're getting the stuffing kicked out of them. suddenly these refs are asking fighters to recite the alphabet backwards in three different languages and at the same time have a perky look in their eyes. all joking aside, i don't think golota knew what the heck the ref was jabbering about.
but we can't get around the potential for weirdness out of either of these two fighters. bottom line, for whatever reason (chiefly that i've seen evidence of great skill from golota), i am not as skeptical going in as you, on this match up.
