Thursday August 10, 7:55 am Eastern Time Press Release Dolby Certifies Analog Devices' Dolby Headphone Implemention On Melody Chipset SHARC® DSP-based chipset delivers realistic 5.1-channel digital audio via any stereo headphones. NORWOOD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2000-- Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE:ADI - news) today announced that Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation has certified its Dolby Headphone(TM) implementation on its Melody(TM) chipset. The ADSST-MELODY-1000 Dolby Headphone(TM) chipset delivers pseudo 5.1-channel digital audio via ordinary stereo headphones, realistically emulating a 5.1-loudspeaker playback system and re-creating full movie theater surround sound on standard audio headphones. The digital audio sources include 5.1-channel Dolby(TM) Digital, AAC, MPEG2, MLP, 4-channel Dolby(TM) Pro Logic(TM) from videotapes and laserdiscs, and two-channel stereo MP3 and MPEG1 audio from CDs, the Internet, and game consoles. Dolby Headphone(TM), a patented technology developed by Lake Technology Ltd. and licensed to Dolby Laboratories, is a unique signal processing system that enables any pair of stereo headphones to realistically portray the sound of a 5.1-loudspeaker playback system. It can be incorporated into any type of audio or video product normally featuring a headphone outlet, and enables ordinary stereo headphones to give the illusion of realistic multichannel loudspeaker-based audio reproduction from up to five loudspeakers.
``Analog Devices now extends its multichannel digital audio to headphone users,'' said Mike Haidar, general manager, Software & Systems Technology Division, Analog Devices. ``Our Melody implementation of Dolby Headphone(TM) delivers the listening experience of multichannel digital audio to millions of headphone users for the first time.''
``Dolby Laboratories adds Analog Devices' Melody implementation for Dolby Headphone to their previously certified decoders for Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic,'' said Ed Schummer, vice president, Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation. ``Their 32-bit decoders enhance the audio listening experience by bringing Dolby multichannel surround sound, used in most commercial movie theaters, to home and mobile users.''
``Lake Technology has developed this unique technology to enable consumers to get the full enjoyment of 5.1-Channel Surround Sound with headphones. People will now be able to experience full surround sound with DVDs in portable equipment, with computers and at home when times call for the use of headphones,'' said Len Layton, Managing Director, Lake Technology.
The ADSST-MELODY-1000 chipset features a 32-bit, floating-point implementation of the Dolby Headphone process, and is currently available.
