Interspeed Receives $100 Million Product Commitment From Intelligent Public Network
IPN And Compaq-Led Consortium Is Using Interspeed's Advanced DSL Access Routers To Create Multi-City IP Network In Australia
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 2000-- Interspeed, Inc. (Nasdaq:ISPD - news) announced today a five-year, $100-million agreement with Intelligent Public Network (IPN), an Australian network services developer, for Interspeed digital subscriber line (DSL) access routers to be used in a national network now being built in Australia and for resale within the region.
Two weeks ago, Interspeed disclosed that more than 100 of its EdgeSpeed(TM) 1000 DSL access routers and related third-party equipment, valued at more than $6.5 million, is now being deployed by IPN in three Australian cities to provide high-speed Internet access, voice-over-IP, on-line back-up and a variety of e-commerce services for a small-to-medium (SME) business market that numbers about 250,000 companies in Australia.
Today's announcement coincides with a statement by IPN in Australia that it is finalizing agreements with Compaq Computer Australia Pty. Ltd. and Compaq Financial Services (Australia) Pty. Ltd., through which Compaq is expected to provide systems integration and support services for IPN's growing base of networking customers, as well as multi-million dollar financing facilities to facilitate technical development, equipment purchase and managed IT solutions packaging by IPN.
These agreements are expected to enable IPN to accelerate development of its National Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) network to serve the high-speed Internet needs of SME business users throughout Australia. Interspeed's EdgeSpeed 1000 access routers are core elements of that network. The access routers enable Internet traffic to flow across conventional copper telephone wires at speeds more than 50 times faster than is generally available to small firms in Australia today.
``This is a landmark event in the DSL marketplace. It vaults Australia into global leadership in applying DSL as a core component of a next-generation network. It validates the importance - as well as the hard work -- of building coalitions in which a number of providers join together, each doing what it does best, to create new networking solutions. In this case, the team includes IPN, Compaq, Cabletron Systems and an Australian network service provider, as well as Interspeed. And it further documents the increasing attractiveness of symmetrical DSL as a market-leading technology,'' Art Goodwin, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Interspeed, commented.
``We want to be first-to-market with the most attractive IP networking offer for small- to mid-size firms. The speed features, pricing and cost-of-ownership advantages of Interspeed DSL access routers help make that possible. We look forward to a long and mutually successful partnership with Interspeed,'' Stephen Snowden, managing director of Melbourne-based IPN, stated.
Initial EdgeSpeed 1000 DSL access routers will be co-located in the network service provider's points-of-presence (POPs) in each city. Intelligent Public Network is supplying the advanced IP-based application services. Compaq is providing back-end infrastructure equipment, consulting, installation, system and site integration and maintenance support as well as financing. Cabletron Systems is providing network interconnect equipment.
Interspeed's ``single-box'' solution integrates IP functionality that is scalable from a single subscriber to thousands in one access router. The EdgeSpeed 1000 is specifically engineered for high-density networks, where DSL service offerings are delivered to large numbers of subscribers. It is ideal for competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), independent Telcos, ISPs and Building-centric Service providers (BSPs) seeking flexible solutions for both central office (CO) and high-density multi-tenant unit (MTU) building deployments.
