But I submit to you that this is not a cause and effect relationship but the result of religion often attracting both the worst and best of humanity.......curious.........no?
I take your point. However, I still see the dogma of any particular religion as being the cause of both good and bad behaviour (the effect). Some people bury people, and stone them to death for going for a walk with one not a relative. This comes from their religion. Religion can be such a powerful authority that the followers of that religion can commit atrocities without blinking an eye. Behavoural boundaries are generally defined or suggested in the dogma of particular bibles, and those who interpret them. Scientists and philosophers being burned at the stake is an example of atrocious behaviour being perceived (by many) as good.
Truly, people have been attracted to religions that reflect their conscious or unconscious proclivities. But, also, many people become involved with particular groups with little or no awareness or rational thought, and they allow certain spokespersons to define their moral or immoral code. If the bible is ones guidebook to living, then the authority contained therein has a potential for evil that is incredible, and this has been demonstrated and paid for with the blood of millions. A God that exemplifies and promotes rage, jealousy, irrationality, destruction, force, revenge, and intolerance of all but his own...is simply not a good role model (ask Giordano Bruno). |
