paul - as a guy who has spent much of his career in database work, I can say for sure that the SUNW page you point to is pretty much complete bull, although well crafted.

Partitionable databases are ideal for most web applications, where the distribution of data is relatively predictable, and allocation of new data to maintain balance is largely automated. Likewise the management of data in a clustered configuration is more complex than in a single box, but not a lot more - certainly nothing like the linear increase in administrative overhead this article suggests.

The argument that the S80 is a 24P machine and the UE10000 a 64P machine also seems silly given that the S80 with 24P outperforms the UE10000 with 64P.

The comments about the mainframe capabilities of the UE10000 are accurate, but in the face of the rest of the BS, that is little comfort.
