the fact they are investing 50% in WCDMA concerns me

Let's suppose, just for argument sake, that QCOM (actually Spinco) produces a W-CDMA chipset by Fall 2001 and it is clearly inferior in performance (on all grounds) to CDMA2000. And lets also assume that Spinco's W-CDMA chip, given their expertise in CDMA chip design, is clearly the best all-around W-CDMA ASIC.

My question is what happens then? What happens to all of the SPs that bid tons of money for 3G spectrum? What do they do for 3G?

Maybe this scenario won't happen. Maybe W-CDMA will be every bit as good as CDMA. Or maybe the SPs will adopt, and their customers will happily buy, wireless products that are clearly inferior in performance.

But then again maybe they won't! What happens then I wonder?

Jacobs says that W-CDMA will not perform as well as CDMA2000. I interpret that as meaning W-CDMA is an inferior product. Maybe Jacobs is mistaken; or even lying. Then again maybe he is telling it like it is.

What do those that have staked their future on W-CDMA do then?
