here is what phone.com has

Phone.com's microbrowser and UP.Link

Burned into the cellphone during the manufacturing process is a 300-Kbyte
microbrowser from Phone.com. This microbrowser uses the cellphone's
screen to display web pages served in the wireless markup language
(WML).

Other carriers besides Sprint PCS using the microbrowser include AT&T's
PocketNet service, GTE's Internet on the Run, and Bell Atlantic
Mobile's Cellscape.

UP.Link is a middle layer that carries data from land-based Internet
protocols, such as HTTP, to the wireless application protocol. Ben Linder
says that because the browser is so small, much of the protocol and
processing work gets done at the UP.Link level.
