Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Peter. It would seem we've gone deeply enough to find much to agree about.

My main point was that IMO when intrusions into privacy take place, it should be with the knowledge and consent of the one being invaded. I'm offended by the notion that because I provide personal information to one entity, that other entities are therefore free to have and use that same information. Even more so, I take great umbrage at any attempts to "steal" information about me either by probing my computer via the internet or by other clandestine tactics. NO disclosure of personal info should be the baseline, and intentional release beyond that should only be with consent.

I oppose a network of laws regulating such things and all the potential nuances that could result, mostly on principle. That said, intrusions into people's lives is getting (has gotten?) out of hand, and something needs to be done to control the huge databases by government and private entities that can retrieve large amounts of information about any particular person. Wish I had a good idea for a solution to the dilema this presents.
