Considering we consider our selves rational folk where the hell does this need come from

Well, considering ourselves rational does not entail, either that we are absolutely so, nor that rationality excludes emotional needs for comfort, and so forth. Even the most rational people in our world are not absolutely so. People are more than simply thinkers. We are vulnerable and fragile wanderers (intellectually and emotionally) in a huge universe, which is extremely difficult to understand. The fact that some of us are somewhat rational does not make us omnipotent or omniscient or without questions or needs. Learning never ends, because we seek that which we lack or need. Otherwise, we would be God. In the end we are simply fragile people--searching for happiness, and not averse to a bit of help. The need comes from the fact that we are limited, and therefore not God...or if we are God, most of us don't know it...
