The thing is, AMD is initiating the price war this time.

Why do you say that? The rest of your post contradicts it.

If the speed distribution of Athlon parts (with the faster $800 chips to be announced soon) is what we think it is, why should AMD underclock their chips, cheat their customers and help Intel?

To me, it is regular pricing, with the fastest chips selling for $800, second fastest for $500 etc.

There were several messages on the hardware sites that Dresden speed distribution starts at 950 MHz. I don't know about Austin, but I think Austin is adding some of the slower parts (900 MHz and below).
