You're probably right. In one of McNamara's recent books, he limited discussion to the period 1961-67, the years he was Secretary of Defense. Another example of his arrogance.

I think we need to look to 1945, the year Vietnam declared independence and the emperor abdicated his throne and appointed Ho Chi Minh as his successor. They borrowed language from our Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man. So much for our idea of self determination.

I was told by someone a few years ago that Diem had the idea of making South Vietnam a Catholic country. Have you come across anything that supports that idea?
