<<Well, considering ourselves rational does not entail, either that we are absolutely so, nor that rationality excludes emotional needs for comfort, and so forth. >>

Well here you will see my biases [if you haven't already figured them out]

I submit that emotional needs are themselves the result of evolutionary adaptation to the need for co-operation.

Did you ever see the reaction of a dog kept in isolation for a period of time then given human or animal attention?

Don't kid yourself that is emotion! Dogs are like us... pack animals. Members of this family are one of the most successful animals on the planet. How do these animals stay together? Emotional ties may be the answer. I submit the proclivity for emotional ties is a genetically programmed adaptation for success. No different than the need to believe in spiritual things.

My conclusion being that rational thought precludes the existence of the spiritual*.And emotional and/ or the need for spiritual meaning is nothing more than evolutionary adaptations for successful beings.

<<Otherwise, we would be God. >> Before you go here don't you think that their should be some reason to believe there is god other than an emotional need to do so?

I don't mean to change the discussion to God or no God but it would seem a natural progression.

* Rational people could well present an argument for religion......I just don't buy it.
