Bandai info

Just stumbled across this thread. Regarding earlier questions of the breakdown of Bandai business, this can be found at bandai.co.jp which seems to show that in the most recently reported fiscal year (FY95, ended 3/31/96) the category "Games and general toys" which includes "Action games, board games, educational toys, electronic toys and video game software" accounted for 20% of sales. The single largest category was "Boys' character toys" at 30.1%. Presumably the data for FY96 ending 3/31/97 will be posted soon.

It appears that unless Tamagotchi brings in phenomenal revenues that it will remain a small portion of total sales for Bandai. That may be possible, however. A local retailer here in Boca Raton, FL who is very attuned to fads is currently making a mint on Beanie Babies and is confident that Tamagotchi will be the Christmas 97 toy in the USA. He also tells me that GigaPets will have the same problems that the Beanie Baby imitators had and will flop.

While the story is interesting, it's still not clear to me whether this is the most compelling opportunity out there at this time.
