cover most of the bases
As with every successfull meme set (coherent set of ideas) the theories of Natural Selection and Puctuated Equilibrium not only cover the known cases, but have sufficient "wiggle room" for new examples and for the exceptions which prove the rule.

The real test should be : with all these exceptional explanations and answers for every question is the core principal maintained? In this case I would say YES. At the core the species which make up the next generation are copied from those which survived the last generation. That is the heart and soul of evolution.

Some of the end products of evolution were and are improbable to the highest degree. If only this and if only that were different they wouldn't exist. The thing is, this and that did happen and so they survived, and in doing so formed the current generation. There are millions of examples where this and that did not go right, and those creatures are extinct.
