Network Appliance (NTAP, news, msgs) reports earnings on Monday, Aug. 14, after the market close.

The Wall Street consensus is calling for 7 cents a share in earnings and revenue of about $222 million -- a 115% increase year to year. The number to watch in the report, however, is gross margin -- Wall Street will be disappointed if the company invests too much in sales, and research and development -- and the book-to-bill ratio. This has historically been a soft period for orders at Network Appliance, and a book-to-bill below 1 (which would mean the company is booking fewer new orders and billing more old orders) is possible. That's why I've put a stop-loss sell order on this stock of $83 a share to protect against a huge drop to the downside
