brk, It is clear from their announcement the medical device segment is lagging. What I'm looking forward to is their forays into the fiber business. NEWP is a "scientific instumentation" business. Turns out the fastest growing subsegment of their business is selling automated assemlby systems to fiber optic component manufactures yet no one considered them a "fiber play".... till now.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company, a spin-off of Hewlett-Packard, said it expects third-quarter earnings to come in between 18 and 22 cents per share, below the First Call consensus estimate of 35 cents a share.

Health-care remains a particular sore point for Agilent. The company said its health-care solutions business is likely to post a third-quarter operating loss "at least equal to last quarter's operating loss of $30 million."

The company blamed weak sales of patient-monitoring equipment. New products in cardiology imaging have only slightly offset the weakness. While Agilent has already taken some actions to come to grips with its health-care market difficulties, "it's clear that additional actions are required, and we'll be making announcements in this area in the next few weeks," said Chief Financial Officer Bob Walker.

He held out hope that Agilent will turn a corner once the third quarter is behind the company. "At this point, we feel comfortable with the consensus estimates of 39 cents for our fourth quarter, and we think there may be some upside potential depending on parts availability," Walker said.
