Most of the early patents (the 1990 patents) were VERY fundamental in nature: Things like transferring data on BOTH leading and trailing edges of the clock, and having an on-memory register to hold various memory parameters. These were not specific to either RDRAM or DDR or even SDRAM; they were simply fundamental characteristics of the memory that would be used in the future, and were NOT characteristics of the memory in use AT THAT TIME (e.g. 1990). That's the whole point: RDRAM, DDR or just SDRAM, it's hard to build late 90's memory, much less 21st century memory, without violating these fundamental ideas on which Rambus applied for patents in 1990.
