The original DDR invention was from the first grandfather clock. The inventors of the grandfather clock realized that the time could be incremented on both edges of the pendulum swing.

Later, this same concept was applied to the bicycle where pedal cranks were put on both sides of the bicycle, allowing energy to be transferred on both halves of a cycle.

Internal combustion engines also use this principle, with pistons alternating and causing combustion twice a rotation of the engine.

Musicians transfer data on both edges of the metronome.

Hope this helps your understanding. Some concepts are so "fundamental", that patents only indicate the ignorance of someone working in the patent office.
