Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives. The drives include 391 samples from 6 different distributors.

The average sample of desktop disk drive prices remained stable last week.

Weekly average price change (weekly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 0.3%
Less than 11gb --- up 0.5%
11gb to 21gb --- down 0.4%
Greater than 21gb --- down 0.4%
Enterprise --- even 0.0%

Current Monthly price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.3%
Less than 11gb --- down 0.9%
11gb to 21gb --- down 2.8%
Greater than 21gb --- down 2.1%
Enterprise --- down 0.5%

Current Quarter price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 2.0%
Less than 11gb --- down 1.1%
11gb to 21gb --- down 2.4%
Greater than 21gb --- down 1.7%
Enterprise --- down 1.1%

2nd Calendar Quarter price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 3.0%
Less than 11gb --- down 3.7%
11gb to 21gb --- down 2.8%
Greater than 21gb --- down 2.6%
Enterprise --- down 1.7%

1st Calendar Quarter price change (monthly rate):
Weighted desktop --- down 1.5%
Less than 11gb --- down 1.1%
11gb to 21gb --- down 1.3%
Greater than 21gb --- down 2.2%
Enterprise --- up 0.1%

Nearly half way through the quarter the samples of retail drive pricing have seen no sign of the oversupply mentioned in the recent Salomon Smith Barney report. SSB mentioned deteriorating prices in the 10gb sector that may be offset in these reports by the emergence of higher priced 7200 rpm 10gb drives. The 10gb drives will likely become a smaller portion of total sales as manufacturing changes to 20gb platters. The 10gb drives may only serve the very bottom priced desktop computers.

This week’s price reduction marked the third straight week of improving price reductions. The quarter matched the first half of last quarter in price reductions at an average of 0.5% per week. However, the last half of last quarter experienced an average weekly drop of 1.1%. It will be interesting to see if this quarter follows the pattern of last quarter as SSB suggests or improves late in the quarter to follow the usual seasonal pattern.

Regards,
Mark
