"So in order to win, MS has to have not only a better product, but a *dramatically* better one."

Interesting that you mention that. But I just read an article cited in a previous post where PALM assembled a highly skilled management team to specifically target Microsoft. One of their cries to rally the troops was that Microsoft doesn't need to get it right to win. They just need to get it close enough.

To that, I'd have to agree. Microsoft is a fierce competitor. Perhaps this time, they didn't even get close enough. But they can improve rapidly as Microsoft has a habit of doing. Or perhaps, this time, PALM focused and beat them with excellent management and product combined.

In any case, IMO, PALM and their licensees are simply more hungry and more desperate, even at 90% market share, than Microsoft and their allies. If you're not complacent, and you have the market share, it's hard for even a company as powerful as Microsoft to break in.
