I believe the AMD reference was to the chipset AMD will make and market themselves? Alcatel's chipsets to my knowledge are made by Alcatel Microelectronics in Belgium.
Yours is the general perception but I believe they actually buy the bulk from AMD. My source talks to Prahbu from time to time and is fairly close to the entire industry.
Read the bottom of the following press release where it talks about other buyouts Francisco Partners has done: amd.com Their investments include the purchase of Globespan, Inc. and Paradyne from Lucent Technology and the $1.8 billion purchase of ON Semiconductor from Motorola, the largest technology buyout in history.
Does anyone know the time frame in which they brought Globespan public? amd.com
From Francisco Partners' press release:
The Communications Products Division of Advanced Micro Devices is a leading fabless provider of integrated circuits (ICs) for the telecommunications industry. CPD provides complete silicon-based solutions, including communications ICs, software and reference system designs. CPD sells its products to communications equipment suppliers in telecommunications markets such as voice, emerging voice, and Internet access. The Company's products are used in central office (CO) and digital loop carrier (DLC) equipment, for traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) local lines and for emerging technologies which bypass or leverage the existing local loop, including Internet access technologies such as DSL and cable. CPD's customers include the world's leading communications and networking equipment suppliers such as Alcatel, Cisco, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Lucent, NEC, Nortel, Tellabs and Siemens. CPD has been a leading producer of communications IC products since the early 1980s. To date, CPD has shipped over 150 million subscriber line audio codecs (SLAC) lines and 110 million subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) lines. In 1999, division revenues were $168 million. Division revenues were $59.5 million during the first quarter of this year. The Communication Products Division has approximately 160 employees and is based in Austin, Texas.
Do you have a list of participants in the Open DSL Initiative? If so, does it include AMD or CPD?
It would also be good to find out CPD's relationship to Virata.
Good discussion, though at some point we may need to take it to another thread. (If ALA followers start to complain.)
