I don't have the facts ... But I do have an opinion.

I see little evidence that families multiply their wealth as each generation takes the reigns. So often that it appears to be almost a rule, subsequent generations, in an attempt to 'put their mark' on the family firm, run the thing into the ground. So, the question becomes: Is the Government better than heirs at squandering wealth? (Certainly it gets more practice!) Perhaps the question is a moral one: Should a person's property be confiscated at death. Or maybe it's a simple question about what's the best policy for society in general.

Estate taxes have been around for a while. Why not try a spell without them and see if things get better or worse. I'm sure there's not too many rich people who will end their lives just to get a tax-break for the kids.
