<<So could we then say that as our knowledge increases and our understanding of the true need for co-operation increases the importance of religion decreases?>>

"What's good for the individual is good for the species"

Although this has stood the test of time it no longer applies in an environment of one species that so dominates that it only competes with itself.

Thus in spite of the knowledge of the importance of co-operation some remain subject to this outdated rule and just don't care.

Can religion help them? We all have heard of the monster that is born again. ..But does religion at this stage of our understanding help more than it hurts?

Remember Bertrand Russell's debate with some Catholic theologian on the value of religion where he poised this question. [paraphasing of course]

Would you rather walk home on some dark night when God has taken a holiday and all sins in his absence will go un noticed or on a Police holiday where no crimes will be punished? .....
