Bob, I understand that the information is simply the usual kind of technical stuff that software companies make available on their web sites (how the product works, how to fix problems, etc) Everybody else provides that stuff publicly. How can hiding it all encourage new customers?
For that matter, how can needing to fool around with passwords encourage existing customers? Even Microsoft, who specialize in wasting customers' time, simply provide the password in the accccompanying email (NB Microsoft tech information is all publicly available. The password is for marketng information such as price lists and ordering discounted products). If the person is already on the mailing list, why not give them the password?

This company, like many of its investors, is very focused on the fact that it has the best technology, and not focused at all on marketing that technology.
