All of the above. Depending on where you stand on any issue or direction. And they are, despite any genuine pursuit for pure innovation that some individuals may possess, a game of positioning and debate, and eventual compromise, or worse, defeat. With some having, ultimately, to "compromise" more than others, lest they suffer the defeat.

With wireless it's particularly interesting, since with wireless there doesn't appear to be a "short list" of candidate technologies that I can discern.

Say, like we did in the combat stages of DSL, when CAP competed with DMT for the lion's share of attention, with only a few other straggler technologies that no one ever paid any real attention to.

In wireless, on the other hand, there appears to me to be no end to the number of air-interface- and upper-sublayer encoding techniques to sort through. Leastwise, not yet.
