How did the butterfly figure out that it would be safer if it developed the pattern of an eagle's eye
on its wings? And then, how did it do that trick? How did the Midwife Toad know how to develop genes
that would produce copulation pads on the male's feet if it had to mate in water but not if it mates
out of water? How far can "Adaptation" go?

The butterfly didn't figure anything out. Some ancestor of the butterfly had random camoflague patterns on it's wings. Those that looks a little more like an eye deterred birds better than those that didn't. The butterfly was oblivious.
