You are confusing hardware and software. There were stable unix variants available for the 68000 and 80286. I can load unstable, crash prone DOS on a 32 bit Coppermine or Athlon.

People bought into 32 bits. The software to use the 80386 didn't exist until many millions had been sold.

If Gateway is selling a 64 bit Sledghammer system at about the same MHZ and price as Dell's 32 bit Willy system, Dell will have a very big problem.

People want the Diamond, not the cubic zirconium.
