Part II

I was relieved, to say the least, that he had not snatched me off my horse! Pete and I hightailed it back to the house and called 911 to report the incident. Shortly thereafter, a sheriff's detective came to take me out to the location where I encountered the man. The detective said the man had escaped while in the custody of a deputy, and had run off into the woods. I showed him the bare-foot prints in the sand and gave a physical description of him. The detective said they were bringing out the bloodhounds to track the scent and asked if I'd like to watch them work. I said, 'Yes!' Darkness approached; other patrol cars were arriving. I realized I had not visited the ladies room since before the meeting on the trail, many hours before. I told the detective I had to take a short walk, then located some bushes that would put me out of sight. No sooner did I drop my drawers than I heard cowbells. The bloodhounds were coming toward me! All I could think was that the hounds would find me squatting in the bushes and all the flashlights would be trained on my bare butt!!! Thank goodness bloodhounds don't run like foxhounds! I don't think I've ever moved so fast as I did at that moment. Got myself put back together and back to the detective's car, stood there with my hands in my pockets, rockin' back 'n forth on my heels, and whistlin' like nothin' happened. The bloodhounds tracked the man, but they didn't apprehend him that night. The TV news reported an escapee at large and 3 days later they caught him- he was 'holed' up at a relative's house.
