WorldCom Seeks Fixed Wireless Permission

NEW YORK (Reuters) - WorldCom Inc. (NasdaqNM:WCOM - news) on Monday said it filed for regulatory permission to offer fixed-wireless services in more than 60 markets in the United States as part of its push to provide high-speed Internet and voice communications services.

WorldCom, the No. 2 U.S. long-distance telephone company, said it has filed with the Federal Communications Commission for permission to provide broadband wireless services in cities such as Boston, Pittsburgh and San Antonio.

Licensing authority is required in each of WorldCom's 160 markets before commercial services can be launched. Applications for additional markets will be made during upcoming FCC filing windows.

``Broadband fixed wireless gives our customers a competitive, reliable choice for high-speed access, especially in markets where few, if any, options exist,'' said John Stupka, president of WorldCom Wireless Solutions.

WorldCom said its trials of fixed wireless technology in five markets are on track as WorldCom prepares for a successful commercial launch, beginning in the fourth quarter of this year and continuing into early next year. Shares of Clinton, Miss.-based WorldCom gained 7/16 to 34-1/8 in morning trading on Nasdaq.
