I'd have to mildly disagree with you here. MEMS appears to be "the" solution that is being adopted by an increasing number of company working on the optical switch solution. Xros, recently bought by NT for $3.25B is pioneering MEMS switching solutions. Lucent has a MEMS switching fabric in trial. One of the most interesting startups of the year in this area is Calient, which has an order of magnitude miniaturization of the switch fabric in the works.
One the other side of the coin, ALA is licensing Agilent's bubble jet switch technology.
So as I see it, MEMS is not the solid state solutions that old hands, like Frank Coluccio for instance, would find to be the most satisfactory solution because of MTBF concerns. But as I observe the situation, MEMS is where the money is, so I'm following it. :)
