Barb- I think you make a reasonably good estimate by examining firearms production records. In colonial times guns were not mass-produced, and they were quite expensive. Beyond what most people could afford. BTW, a few months ago The Atlantic had a good review of the history of guns in 18th and 19th century America- I think they don't have it on their website (www.theatlantic.com), but I'll try to get you a reference if you like. And then there are the historical records of the day indicating how people lived. It's simply a myth perpetrated by NRA types that America "grew up" with guns. Also, according the The Atlantic article, for a combination of technological and social reasons, gun ownership didn't really become even remotely pervasive until after the Civil War.
