Wrong, Dan. IA-64 is indeed compatible with x86. In fact, my job would have been a LOT easier had Intel decided to simply drop the compatibility. (Same with many of my coworkers.)

The difference is optimization. Itanium's x86 performance isn't going to be outstanding (though I'm guessing it will be the same as Pentium III Xeon at the same MHz). I won't doubt that AMD's Sledgehammer will beat Itanium in 32-bit performance. But the AMDroids are hoping that Sledgehammer will also be able to match the 64-bit performance of IA-64. I don't believe for a moment that this will happen.
