This idea that taxes are "stolen" from the rich...when I said wacky I guess I didn't realize how FAR RIGHT I was (amongst)!
Actually perhaps extorted may be a more accurate term. You pay your money to the government because of the threat of what might happen if you don't. It is sort of like a protection racket except it actually does provide protection and other services. Taxes are necessary if we are to avoid anarchy, but they are a necessary evil, not a good thing.
all the while demanding that the poor pay more taxes.)
I don't think the poor should pay more. I think the overall level of taxation should be lower, because government should spend less and do less.
Long ago I noticed that the more taxes I paid and the more I shared, the more I seemed to make. (In fact, this is an ancient belief that predates any "isms") And it appeared to be an agreeable contract between this great country and the honest and hard working amongst us.
You got that backwards. You don't make more because you "share" more, you get more taken from you because you have produced more. I am almost certain that you realize this, but I am replying to what you posted, not what I think you think or know. Taxes are not sharing. Sharing is voluntary. If something is taken by force then it is not something that you have shared. It is not a contract, I never signed a paper agreeing with the US government that they can have as much of my money as they want in exchange for whatever services they feel like providing.
And, get this, these ingrates always seem to credit only themselves for what wealth they've acquired and never give any thanks to the great nation that allowed them to prosper.
Our country provides a good environment for people to prosper, however the government of our country is not responsible for our wealth. Individual people find ways to prosper in this good environment. A government is not being great by avoiding by allowing people to prosper, it is merely avoiding being evil and oppressive.
