I always wondered why they scuttled the talks with Ciena as well. That was at least two years ago. They would have been in the game pretty good now, had they done that. I wonder what the rational was.

Mindmeld - The explanation that was given was "cultural differences". CIEN had been working with the carriers long enough to know that they weren't about to let CSCO waltz in and start telling them that they should be running their business according to CSCO's rules. CIEN's CEO is given to plain speaking and I doubt if CSCO appreciated hearing what he had to say.

If you want a feel for the carrier's point of view concerning vendors you might want to take a look at the comments Sprint's director of network planning and design made at Opticon2000. NT has demonstrated through contracts that it is quite capable of meeting the needs of both established carriers and the new kids on the block. - peggylynn
