Eliminate public schools? Homeschooling as a viable alternative? Private schools at all tuition levels springing up everywhere? I don't think so. We can theorize/fantasize about illogical and unworkable scenarios such as these all day, but in the meantime, real children are being deprived of the kind of education a prosperous society can provide. If upi think about it, I don't think any of us would want to live in a society that left the education of its children to such haphazard methods. The problem is, until people are convinced its in their best interests to do so, most will echo your comment about not wanting the bureaucrats to have any more of their money.
My mother is a teacher in an economically depressed section of Northern California. She doesn't have to work- she is one of those people who do it because she loves it. Her classroom isn't properly heated and cooled. Many of her second grade students show up without having had breakfast-
and its her task to educate these children and instill in them a love of learning. I think there is a lot more society could be doing to assist people like my mother assist these kids. Everybody will applaud the selfless teachers who are do heroic things to help children, but nobody wants to help pay for it. Having grown up with a teacher, I guess I come by my liberal bias in this area honestly- but IMO it is not only a moral imperative, but it is in all of our best interests to care about and support public education.
