Dan, <I know that Itanic will boot older OSs and chug slowly through standard code, but everything I've read says that doing so results in a $500 eMachine running as fast or faster than a $25,000 Itanic server.>

Please show me the TPC server benchmark results of a $500 eMachine. While you're at it, please show me the TPC server benchmark results of any AMD-based platform.

<When somebody allocates 50 or 100K to replace a server, it had damn well better handle an order of magnitude greater workload than the old one.>

Ever hear of scalability? Itanium servers will run 32-bit apps just fine, probably on the level of performance as an equivalently-clocked Xeon server. (This is not unreasonable to assume.) Then future performance is just a software upgrade away from 32-bit to IA-64. This ensures the longevity of the Itanium server.

The current alternatives would be:

- Purchase a Xeon server, which will cost less up front, but will not have the performance scalability of Itanium. Hence, the Xeon server will have a shorter life span and will need to be upgraded sooner.

- Wait for Foster (still the greatest threat to Itanium in my mind).

- Wait for some 64-bit vapor from a company which has yet to release even a 2-way SMP server platform.
